Aside from skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer found in men. Statistics show that 1 in every 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their life. As a result, scientists are constantly researching new treatments for prostate cancer.

The prostate, an organ found only in men, is an important part of the uro-genital system. It is located below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, which connects to the bladder and allows for the evacuation of urine. The prostate, like any other organ, is susceptible to carcinoma and the need for new treatment is overwhelming. While many researchers focus on prevention, there are others who do focus on treatment. While prevention is important, for those already diagnosed with prostate cancer new treatment is necessary.

One new treatment for prostate cancer is HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound). This treatment destroys the cancerous tissue by using sound waves. Sound waves are aimed directly at the cancer and focused until they heat the tissue to approximately 90 degrees Celcius and literally cook the tumor away. The procedure takes 1 – 4 hours to complete and it is done under spinal anesthesia. As with many new treatments, High Intensity Focused Ultrasound is, for now, only available outside of the United States. It does however, show great promise. Internationally, over 6000 men have had this procedure performed successfully.

In conclusion, prevention is the key for those with a significant family history but who have not yet been diagnosed. For those who are currently living with the diagnosis of prostate cancer new treatment brings a ray of hope. There is constant research being performed in the area of prostate cancer and High Intensity Focused Ultrasound is the most recent breakthrough in the treatment of this terrible disease.

Since in US, more than 200,000 new cases of prostate cancer are discovered every year a more effective treatment was desperately needed.

At the prostate cancer symposium in Orlando, co-sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Eric J. Small, MD, UCSF professor of medicine and urology

presented the findings of the study he led helped by other 19 US institutions, regarding an effective treatment for prostate cancer.

Scientists said that the rate of survival increased by four and a half months in those who were administered the cancer vaccine compared with those who got the placebo.

For the patients this is great news because it gives them hope that an even better vaccine could be discovered.

This vaccine is not like the others that are designed to prevent a disease. This is made to treat advanced prostate cancer by increasing the immune system’s response to cancer cells.

The vaccine was well tolerated by patients and the side effects were mild: fever and chills. This is good news because chemotherapy and radiation gives a lot of unbearable side effects and cancer patients are often on the look out for other possible alternative less drastic cancer treatments .

Small included in the study 127 patients suffering of asymptomatic metastatic hormone refractory prostate cancer (HRPC). 82 of them received the vaccine and 45 got placebo. They were administered three shots over six weeks. The treatment continued three years.

For those treated with the vaccine, the median rate of survival was 25.9 months. For those who got a placebo treatment, the overall of survival was 21.4 months.
The conclusions were that 115 patients of this group had progressive disease at the time of data analysis and all patients were followed for survival for 3 years.

Scientists do not know if the vaccine will work on patients suffering of early-stage prostate cancer and of explosive terminal cancer. The vaccine, called Provenge, does not cure cancer but at least it slows it down. A prostate cancer diet can also be an additional help and support alongside conventional treatments.

Other cancer vaccines are being developed for treating: leukemia, breast cancer, colon cancer, and kidney and pancreas cancer as well.

The human body is not able to recognize the cancer cells and that is why it can not fight them without help. The vaccine is designed to alert the body is cancerous cells are present. Provenge has been made out of a genetically engineered protein and a dendritic cell provided from the patient’s bloodstream. After getting the vaccine shots, the immune system will react and will activate immune T-cells to find and destroy the cancer cells.

This discovery is important not only for those who suffer of the disease but also for the field. This vaccine confirms what everybody denied, that vaccines can really work.

There have been recent reports in several broadsheet newspapers that exercise can help to prevent and even fight prostate cancer. They newspapers claim that together with a low fat diet , prostate cancer can be fought because exercise affects ‘genes that fight the disease’.

This conclusion is unfortunately a bit premature, as the study where this information was originally from only looked at the effects exercise had on genes in men who were at almost no risk of getting prostate cancer anyway. Because of this, it isn’t possible to backup the claims the newspapers have been making at this time (July 08). Future studies may be able to prove/disprove this theory, but until then prostate cancer exercises should not replace medical treatment.

Of course, being healthy has many other benefits and is a great thing anyway. You can’t go wrong with staying healthy, and whether or not it does stave off prostate cancer should not affect whether you aim to stay healthy or not.

It is important that men with prostate cancer do not let this study of prostate cancer exercises affect their decisions when it comes to deciding which treatment they have. There is no evidence at the moment the prostate cancer exercises can fight the disease, while medical treatments have been becoming more and more successful for around twenty years. Men with prostate cancer should discuss their treatment options with a doctor and decide based on this advice. The final decision with all prostate cancer treatments is always given to the patient.
